Why we do it

By now, I’m sure you have heard about the most expensive mis-selling scandal in the UK. With a total bill so far of almost £40bn, Payment Protection Insurance – known as PPI – has become synonymous with banks putting profits ahead of its customers.

The Issue of PPI being a poor-value product because of expense and exclusions was first raised by Which? Magazine in 1998 and followed up by the FSA in 2005 when it issued its first report on PPI, identifying poor selling practices and lack of compliance controls in the PPI market.

PPI was sold alongside mortgages, credit cards and personal loans and was designed to cover payments if customers fell ill or lost their jobs. The policies were highly profitable for the banks but were often sold to customers without their knowledge or to people who were unable to claim, such as the self-employed. The Financial Services Authority began imposing fines on banks for the mishandling of PPI in 2006.

With at least 34 million PPI policies thought to have been sold since 2001, there is a good chance that you may have been sold PPI even if you are not aware of it. In our experience, many people who were not aware that they had PPI when they contacted us, have gone on to receive PPI compensation.
